55 imagesIn April 2013 I joined volunteers and staff of the turtle conservation organization Widecast to document two of their projects in Costa Rica. The first was in Pacuare on the Caribbean coast where we worked to collect and protect the eggs of giant nesting leatherbacks before poachers could get to them. The second was located on the Pacific in the Osa Peninsula, where we captured turtles with nets to tag, measure vitals, clean off parasites, and then release back to the ocean. This project also included mangrove reforestation and sea grass monitoring programs to restore this area's damaged ecosystem.
87 imagesIn March of 2013 I joined nonprofit group Power to the People in documenting solar powered communities in rural Nicaragua. The group has been working for five years now installing photovoltaic panels on schools to bring the benefits of electricity to people who have never had this resource.
40 imagesIn January 2014 I was selected to shoot a documentary project in Ecuador for the Canadian nonprofit Photographers Without Borders. I lived in the community of Tolte-Pistishi for eight days to document daily life of a small Andean community struggling to survive and reinvent itself as an ecotourist destination. My images will benefit a partner organization called AVANTI in Ecuador whose mission is to empower disadvantaged communities through education and sustainable economic development.
